Academic Paper

A paper summarizing this project was published open access in the International Journal of LGBTQ+ Youth Studies in 2025.

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to engage with transgender, Two-Spirit, and nonbinary youth in Canada to address gender health-related knowledge gaps through development of health information resources and an agenda for future research. Participatory action research methodology focused on empowering youth as research collaborators and creating positive social change through development of openly accessible resources. Opportunities for participation included a Youth Advisory Team, focus groups, and an online survey. Twelve health information needs were identified via conventional content analysis: accessing care; talking with providers; rights, privacy and consent; safety; family, partner and peer support; school, workplace and community support; mental health and spiritual support; social transition support; puberty blockers; hormone therapy; gender-affirming surgeries; and sexual & reproductive health. Future research foci categories included: social and cultural; healthcare experiences; gender-affirming medical interventions; and systems-level issues. This project provided opportunities for youth to develop research skills and centered youth voices. The suite of health information resources is openly accessible online and can be adapted to address needs of youth in different regions and social contexts. The research agenda provides guidance for addressing health information needs and improving healthcare, social systems, and wellbeing of transgender, Two-Spirit, and nonbinary youth.
